As many states across the United States begin to re-open businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic is still affecting the lives of many. As citizens rush to get back to work amidst financial strain, others are worried that it may be too soon to do so. Like many other states, Georgia has seen some of the highest numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases. More than 30,000 people in Georgia have tested positive for the coronavirus and there have been more than 1,600 people have died from the disease. However, in cities like Savannah, residents are enjoying daily activities and taking advantage of the eased restrictions, many without wearing masks out in public.
Under Governor Brian Kemp’s orders, businesses were set to begin reopening while following set safety guidelines and restrictions to protect both workers and the public. Social distancing and washing hands are the main safety precautions that were suggested. Another precaution that seems to be practiced less often is wearing masks while out in public. In Savannah’s busy downtown historic district, residents flocked to their favorite dining spots and bars when these businesses opened their doors.
Many wonder if the lifted restrictions and lack of people wearing protective mask will cause a spike in new COVID-19 cases. Retired nurse assistant and local resident Jacqueline Collins feels that it will. “I can’t risk going out without a mask because I have underlying health conditions”, said Collins.
According to the Center for Disease Control, the coronavirus is mainly spread through person-to-person contact. The CDC suggests wearing a cloth face cover when going out in public to grocery stores and other public places. “We have to responsible and protect ourselves and others from this disease by preventing the spread of it”, said Collins.
Although there is not a vaccine for coronavirus at present time, following the safety guidelines as suggested by authorities may slow the spread of the virus. As more businesses open and people desire to get back to a place of normalcy, the outcome is uncertain. There is no indication that following these guidelines will eventually combat the virus, but only time will tell.
